What is BowenWork?

A gentle, profoundly effective & noninvasive bodywork in which the practitioner uses fingers & or thumbs in a sequence of rolling movements over specific sites on the body. With each sequence of movements made over muscles, tendons & ligaments, signals are sent to the autonomic nervous system and processed to respond. Response occurs during the session & into the next week towards rebalance & recovery, resulting in deep relaxation, resetting of muscle tension, changes in range of motion, lymphatic drainage/detoxification & pain relief. Because of the profound effects on the body as a whole, BowenWork has wide applications compared to other bodywork modalities. BowenWork alleviates symptoms & assists in recovery from acute injuries to chronic conditions, as well as keeping the most physically fit operating optimally. It is safe, gentle & appropriate for all ages & stages of life from infants to the elderly and from the healthy & expectant mothers to the most clinically frail.

Meet your BowenWork specialist, Vickie

I stumbled across Bowenwork looking to help my husband Richard who had suffered for over 20 years from frequent & unpredictable flare ups of lower back pain & spasms. He had tried acupuncture, chiropractic care, physical therapy, new mattresses, pain meds... At times, Richard's back pain would keep him home from work for days & off seeking quick medical attention. After 2 sessions of Bowenwork, Richard’s back pain & spasms had resolved!! I was so impressed that I made an appointment to experience a Bowenwork session for myself & to see if it could be something helpful for my son with autism.

After a few sessions & some research, I soon discovered that the Bowen technique has successfully addressed a wide variety of health & wellness issues.

I was fascinated that a gentle therapy could have such profound effects. Harry Wharff (my Bowenwork practitioner) & his wife Bev encouraged me to enroll in a Bowenwork class. I did just that to satisfy my curiosity & to learn something that I could apply to help my own family & friends. I quickly found myself practicing not just on my family & friends, but neighbors & friends of friends... I was having a blast working on case studies & thinking about how different Bowenwork procedures could affect the body. Realizing that I was able to actually help people live better, I decided to proceed through the courses to become a certified practitioner.

As a practitioner, I have been challenged to help others of various ages & stages of health/ illness, using my hands as a labor of love & care. I continue to be amazed to witness that such a gentle therapy could be so effective & long lasting! I have been rewarded much more than I could ever imagine as a Bowen practitioner, helping others feel & live better. I thank & praise God for such an opportunity to serve others through Bowenwork therapy!!

I am passionate about living life fully & in a God honoring way, balancing my life with my best friend and husband & 3 kiddos (Joshua, Preston & Erica) and serving others and my community.

But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31 (NLT)

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.

3 John 1:2

What is a BowenWork session like?

Your practitioner will take a brief health history, do an assessment & decide on which BowenWork procedures to apply for the session. The practitioner should be able to work through your light, loose-fitting clothing. After each sequence of gentle moves, the practitioner will leave you resting comfortably for a few minutes at a time to allow your body to begin responding. Actual "hands-on" BowenWork takes only a few minutes of the entire 20 to 60 minutes session. A few simple care instructions will be given to you at your session. Your practitioner may also demonstrate a few exercises to do daily beginning on the day after your session to improve your results.

Rebalance - Recover - Relief

Lasting and significant relief or recovery seen within a few sessions, scheduled one week apart (in most cases). More complex neurological or other chronic conditions may require ongoing maintenance sessions (twice monthly to quarterly, depending on a client’s condition).

History of Bowen

Tom Bowen (1916-1982) developed his technique in the 1950s in Australia. He was interested in ways to alleviate human suffering & noticed that certain moves on the body had particular effects. Without having previous formal training in any other discipline, Tom stated that his work was "a gift from God'. Mr. Bowen performed about 13,000 treatments/year which was verified by a government inquiry into alternative health care professionals. Since treatments were 7 days apart & most people needed only 1 to 3 treatments, an amazing number of clients benefited. He did free clinics for children, the disabled, & community service workers. In 1974, Oswald Rentsch met Mr. Bowen for the first time. Knowing nothing of Mr. Bowen's work, Ossie spontaneously asked if he could learn from him. Mr. Bowen shook Ossie's hand & said, "Good! Come down & I'll teach you... "For the next 2 ½ years Ossie studied & documented Mr.Bowen's work. Mr. Bowen had no notes, charts or manuals. Honoring Mr. Bowen's request to teach the work after his death, Ossie & Elaine named it The Bowen Technique. Since 1986, they have introduced Bowtech to over 40 countries. They are now supported in this teaching by a large faculty of dedicated instructors who are accredited by, & registered with, the Academy. Because this technique is so effective, it has been widely embraced by a broad spectrum of people. Health professionals are impressed by the effectiveness of the Bowen technique & the diversity of problems addressed by it.
